Somebody who is looking around at their options for losing weight may come around to the pharmacy and look at those diet and weight loss pills They may wonder if those pills are right for them. What are the pluses and the minuses of those pills. Diet and weight loss pills work in a number of ways and at a number of strengths. Primarily, they work by either increasing a body’s metabolism, decreasing the appetite, or by blocking the body’s ability to absorb fat from foods. They can either come in prescription strength (which is usually reserved for people with a rather high BMI and obesity-related health disorders) or over the counter form.
For some people, weight loss pills may be the one last little push that gets them over the hump in terms of losing weight. They are not a silver bullet nor do they work on their own, but if a person has tried everything and is still not seeing that needed weight loss a diet pill may just have enough energy to carry them over that last hump in the battle of the bulge. Some of the advantages of weight loss pills are that when taken in a safe manner, if they are proven and effective to work, they may help us lose weight much faster than we may have previously thought possible. The can be that extra “something” that gets the pounds fllying off faster than we can count.
As with any stimulant or pill, weight loss pills and supplements also carry certain disadvantages. If a person can lose weight without those supplements and or weight loss pills it is far more preferable to go along that path even if it is longer. As weight loss pills and supplements change the body they may put a person at risk for certain side effects, such as increased anxiety, diarrhea or stomach problems. Lastly some weight loss pills (notably stimulants) carry with them the risk of addiction, abuse, and overdose. This is why these pills should not be taken without consultation by a doctor.
The advantages and disadvantages of weight loss pills are numerous and should be examined by each individual. There is no one hard “yes” or “no” answer; it depends upon each person’s genetics and overall health. But for some the weight loss pills advantages may outweigh potential disadvantages. It is up to each person along with their doctor to decide.
